Decimus Burton: The Listening Architect

We often remember architects for their work in a particular style or building type. Some, would only work for famous clients. Some refused to compromise their approach to design, despite their clients' needs and wishes. Decimus Burton, however, was somewhat unique in embracing different styles of architecture and applying them to public and private commissions, as well as to projects for developers, where financial constraints and returns on investment would often influence the final design.

His success, it can be argued, lay in his humble approach to design - it is an approach that we are the richer for today.
